Migrating to Australia?

If you have landed on this website, its likely that you’re thinking about coming to Australia either on a temporary or perhaps more permanent basis.

Australia is a nation of migrants. It is a multicultural society with many different language, ethnic and cultural groups. It has a stable government, and provides a safe and secure environment to raise a family and start a business.

On this website, I have summarised the requirements for some of the more common classes of visas (click on the menu tab). Just because a particular type of visa doesn’t appear on this site, it doesn’t mean that I can’t help you with it. Please just ask.

You are also more than welcome to follow my blog to keep up to date with recent changes.

I am a registered migration agent (0101077) and practising barrister.  I am a member of the NSW Bar Association and the Migration Institute of Australia. I can assist you with your visa application and also with any legal work (including review applications in the courts and tribunals).

I am bound by the Code of Conduct.

The decision to migrate is an important and often life changing one. There is no requirement that you need to have a migration agent assist you with your visa application. You can (and many people do), prepare their own visa applications. If you use an agent, you should make sure that you use a registered one. In Australia, only Registered Migration Agents can provide immigration advice and assist people with their visa applications. It is a criminal offence to provide advice without being registered.

Even lawyers need to be registered and only 32% of registered agents are also lawyers. Using the services of a lawyer/agent will ensure that you are dealing with someone who is up to date with law and policy.

Anyone who is not an Australian citizen is required to have a visa to enter and remain in Australia. Those who do have a visa are “lawful non-citizens” and those without a current valid visa are “unlawful non-citizens”The most common way of becoming unlawful is to overstay the visa’s expiry date. The general rule (there are exceptions) is that you need to have a valid visa to be able to apply for another visa. If you are or are about to become unlawful it is very important that you get advice about your options promptly.

How much it will cost to help you with your visa application will depend on what you ask me to do. Sometimes people want me to do everything for them, sometimes they want some advice on a particular topic or they want me to check an application before it is lodged. All of this is possible and I will try to be flexible in the amount that is charged.

All applicants for permanent visas are required to sign an Australian Values Statement in which they acknowledge:

Australian society values respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual, freedom of religion, commitment to the rule of law, Parliamentary democracy, equality of men and women and a spirit of egalitarianism that embraces mutual respect, tolerance, fair play and compassion for those in need and pursuit of the public good.

Australian society values equality of opportunity for individuals, regardless of their race, religion or ethnic background.

The English language, as the national language, is an important unifying element of Australian society.
